Hello Alabama Section,

On December 14, 2017, The Alabama Bicentennial Amateur Radio Club set up a D-Star VHF station in the Old House Chamber at the Alabama State Capitol. After Governor Kay Ivey announced the Alabama Bicentennial Schools Initiative, she proceeded to the radio station initiating a contact with Lee County Emergency management Agency. On Alabama’s 198th birthday, Gov Ivey was the first person to use “AL2C” live, on the air. She discussed points of the Alabama Bicentennial over the air.

Otto Arnoscht, N4UZZ, Net Manager, Central Alabama Skywarn and AL2C Call Sign Trustee, was the control operator. Also present at the Capitol, were Clay Redden, KC4YAU, Alabama House of Representatives Public Information Officer, JVann Martin, W4JVM, Alabama ARRL Section Manager, Ed Tyler, N4EDT, Alabama ARRL Public Information Coordinator, Trent Davis, KV4UZ, Autauga County ARES Asst. Emergency Coordinator and Treasurer, Alabama Bicentennial Amateur Radio Club, W4EGR, Jason Smith, Autauga County ARES Asst. Emergency Coordinator, and Christopher Hall, K4LIA, Alabama ARRL State Government Liaison, Autauga County ARES Emergency Coordinator and President, Alabama Bicentennial Amateur Radio Club.

On the other end of the conversation at Lee County Emergency Management Agency was Mike Watkins, WX4AL. Mike is District Delta ARES Emergency Coordinator and Lee County ARES Emergency Coordinator.

On stand-by for backup at Alabama State Emergency Management Agency was Director Brian Hastings along with Westly Martin, KI4VAE, Senior IT Systems Technician, and Sheldon Hutcherson, KK4FFG, Disaster Communications Unit Leader.

The Alabama Bicentennial Amateur Radio Club and “AL2C” were founded by Christopher Hall, K4LIA in July, 2017. He has been working with the Alabama Bicentennial Commission to promote Alabama’s Bicentennial. The “AL2C” Special Event will run from now December 2017 until the end of 2019.

I'm very excited to see the hard work that has been in the works for some time now to promote amateur radio in concert with the Alabama Bicentennial celebration. It was great to activate the brand new callsign AL2C on Alabama's 198th birthday and we look forward to many more activities to come as we build up to Alabama's 200th Birthday.

A special thank you to Christopher Hall, K4LIA and all those involved in this exciting adventure. We look forward to additional announcements and events involving AL2C.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Yeah the only time the FEMA courses mean anything is when we do SET Training and they ask if you are Basic or Advanced. Other than that they make a nice certificate to hang on the wall. :)

The FEMA IS Courses are ok, but they dont mean anything in our world. They are meant for the FEMA Employees
