Alabama Section News Jan 2017
« on: January 31, 2017, 08:37:02 AM »
Hello Alabama,

I hope you are doing well and staying warm in our short bursts of cold weather here and there.

I wanted to send you an update on what is going on in some areas and also ask that you send me anything that you would like announced in FEB that is happening at a county level. Equally important, I ask that you post any amateur radio activities on our Facebook ARES and Facebook ALARRL pages so that everyone can follow the activities. I know I enjoy seeing these announcements and like seeing the pictures from the events that take place.

Our ALARRL.COM website is still in the draft development phase with testing of the pages and content creation for each section of the website. I want to give a shout out to Shawn Campbell - N4BAT for volunteering to tackle this and we look forward to seeing the page with a new face lift.

The 2017 ARRL Alabama Outstanding Youth Ham Award nomination form is now available for your use and sharing. Please share this at your clubs and special events so that we collect multiple names to nominate for this great award. Although I cannot attach the nomination form to this Section News Email, I have posted the first page of its content below.

I would like to thank Kaitlyn Cole, KS3P for organizing this effort and we look forward to you contacting her to receive the entire form via email. Her contact information is listed below.

NOMINATION REQUIREMENTS - OUTSTANDING YOUTH The 2017 Alabama Section Outstanding Youth Ham Award is intended to recognize a youth ham, under the age of 18, who has demonstrated his or her dedication to Amateur Radio through his or her activities.  Although there are several national awards of similar merit, we recognized the need for an award that honors outstanding young hams on the local level.  Thus, the ARRL Alabama Section Outstanding Youth Ham Award was born.  This award is not a contest for a prize.  Any prizes given are secondary in nature.  A person selected “ARRL Alabama Outstanding Youth Ham”; is judged on his or her contributions to society through Amateur Radio.
Nominees for the Alabama Section Outstanding Youth Ham Award must meet the following requirements to be considered for this award:
•      A current Alabama resident
•      A licensed Amateur Radio operator
•      18 years of age or younger
 •      Nominations, which include the nomination form and any
supporting documentation for the Alabama Section Outstanding Youth Ham Award must be submitted on, or before July 16, 2016.
•      The award winner will be notified by July 30, 2017.
•      The official presentation and announcement of the award will
be on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at the Huntsville Hamfest, in Huntsville, Alabama.
Additional Information
 •      Documentation of the nominee’s activities should be as
thorough as possible.
•      Although all accomplishments and activities will be
considered, the concentration should be on those activities that took place within the past calendar year, and it should be clear when each activity occurred.
•      The judges will select an award recipient based on their
involvement in ham radio, especially community service, promotion of Amateur Radio, operating, technical knowledge, and enthusiasm.
•      All decisions of the judges are final.
•      Nominations and all accompanying material must be mailed to
Alabama Section Outstanding Youth Ham Committee c/o Kaitlyn Cole KS3P,
117 Willow Valley Drive , Harvest, AL 35749  or e-mailed to ks3p@live.com  on or before July 17, 2017.
•      Any questions about the award or nomination process should be
directed to Kaitlyn Cole, KS3P at ks3p@live.com  or Stan Cole, NX3P at nx3p@hotmail.com .

State Appointment Adjustment for Special Needs Liaison

Our existing special needs liaison for District 6 is Michael Werner, KF4BOG. In speaking with Michael and the EC for Madison Co, Tim L.
Holland, KK5H Michael has agreed to serve as the Special Needs Liaison for the State. This means that Michael is willing to share his story, techniques, and how he handles challenges while being an amateur operator in Alabama. Michael volunteers his services in his local district to help make others aware that even though you may have special needs, you can still strive to be an active amateur radio operator.

We wish to congratulate Michael on offering his insight in amateur radio for those with special needs. He will continue to serve in his local area and can be available by email or phone should you have someone that would like to reach out to Michael to share his story.

Please keep in mind this is not an ADA position, but is a volunteer position to help others see the benefits of utilizing ham radio with challenges or special needs.

73 everyone and thank you for what you do.

PS: We have turned in our SET scores for Alabama that reporedt to us.
If you have not sent your report in, please do so before FEB 3rd to have it count towards Alabama SET.

Thank you!

Yeah the only time the FEMA courses mean anything is when we do SET Training and they ask if you are Basic or Advanced. Other than that they make a nice certificate to hang on the wall. :)

The FEMA IS Courses are ok, but they dont mean anything in our world. They are meant for the FEMA Employees
